Beta Carotene belongs to the family of carotenes or carotenoids. It is found in plants carotenes form the yellow and orange pigments in plants. Carotene is converted to vitamin A (Retinol) during digestion. Two parts of carotene is converted to vitamin A in the body but only as much vitamin A is produced from Beta Carotene as the body required because excessive amount of vitamin A in supplement can be harmful. This is why Beta-Carotene is called safe source of vitamin A. Beta Carotene is also used as a coloring agent for food such as margarine.
